Ethiopia is “a very shining example” of African and international hospitality for refugees in spite of its limited resources and the great challenges of its own, said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

The Commissioner told journalists yesterday that “Ethiopia is a very good model of how a country with a limited resources and a great challenge of its own keeps its doors open, its arms open to people from neighboring countries that are in trouble and seek protection here.”

He added that many places of the world are, unfortunately, getting tired of receiving refugees.

The message to the rest of the world is “we must help Ethiopia to carry out this heavy responsibility and also be inspired by Ethiopia because it is a very shining example of African hospitality and international hospitality,” Grandi stressed.

The 2017 World Refugees Day was marked in Ethiopia yesterday under the theme “We Stand Together with Refugees”.

UNHCR decided to mark the day in Ethiopia mainly to express its recognition for the country which is home to over 850,000 refugees.
